Congratulations...You're Not Helping Anyone

Families and students of my wealthy
The same goes for seniors. Where you’re headed next year is no secret, and if you’re going to college, then congratulations: you will be getting a fantastic education, no matter where you are, and it’s almost refreshing to see a sticker representing an institution not nearly as renowned as the “top schools.” But if that’s all it is, pure proud representation, then let’s dispose of the anonymity. Your friends are happy for you, your parents are happy for you, and your teachers are happy for you, too. It’s the people who know and care about you that matter. No stranger is going to get out of his car at a red light, knock on your window, and ask to shake your hand. Wear your college gear around your friends and celebrate your future, but take a second to think about what you may be inadvertently doing. These stickers can logically do nothing but cut-down and hurt others, endorse competition and rivalry, and sometimes promote the idea to aspiring children that anything short of the Ivy League and its peers is a failure in the eyes of the public.
Parents and students: you’re happy; you’re on a high after so many years. So am I. It’s understandable to have placed a sticker on your car in a bout of happiness and pride. Now, if you’ve got one on a car, do the right thing and remove it. At least part of you probably dislikes the competition of the college admissions process and, most importantly, no hard-working child or proud parent deserves to be subject to even fleeting feelings of inferiority.

6 Notes -
Well okay - but I guess I'm not just that polite.
I tell people about Haverford for two reasons.
1.) The most common response I think any future Haverfordian gets is "Haver what? Harvard? You're going to Harvard?!"
Even Haverford themselves encourages us to educate others in just the mere existence of the college - not its academic standing or rank in college surveys.
2.) I worked for a good number of years for an education. Anytime I hear community college or "sit in front of the tv" as a next year plan I gak. Thats a pathetic way of living and I'm terribly sorry for these people - but as I said - that's the moment when I feel the need to be mildly condescending and foretell their not-so-hott-and-pampered future. Get a life requires getting an education of some manner first.
If My Super Sweet 16 is doing it for you - sweet.
I really have to agree with the original post on this one.
I go to a college prep school, which is completely engulfed in the entire what-college-are-you-going-to culture. There really is no benefit to be had by boasting your future over someone elses. If someone goes out of their way to tell you, condescendingly, that their future of Monster Garage and Total Request Live is going to make them happier than yours persuing greater education, that's one thing. Then it is your place to tell them that maybe their plan isn't going to work so well.
Aside from perhaps smiting the innocent arrogance of one who lacks university movitivation, where you're going to college is where you're going to college. I feel, perhaps because of my environment, that too much is placed on where you attend school. Seniors get asked time and time again where they're going to school, and it defines the way that they are looked at.
But I especially agree with the point of Iskender that the back of your car isn't the place to display your pomposity. I realize that there's no way to put something on the back of your car that would tell the world about who you truly are as a person or give insight to your internal life, but then isn't it best to let them see you as a stranger? All the bumper sticker on the back of your car does is cause judgements, something that we don't need any more of.
It provides more than judgement - it also provides entertainment.. something to read while I'm driving when I forget my novel.
Second, I think it hurts as much as "benefits" you in the end. And if it's neutral - I don't see anyone having a right to tell me I'm being stupid for my actions. The sticker stays along with my I Love My Farm Fresh.. Live Simply so Others May Simply Live, and some other various track related tags that I left there when I bought it.
Third.. just because it hit me - Tim do you know where Haverford is? I've known like 2 high schoolers who did before I told them about it. Out of 100's. Do I get a pardon?
Yeah I think that having a window cling advertizing a top-flight school is sort of bragging, but if you are that intelligent and that hard-working, then you have certainly earned the right to show off. i know people going to yale and harvard, and sure it makes me feel kind of inadequate, but im also inspired to do better myself.
Maybe I'm just biased because I don't think it's that impressive if you've wasted your four years in high school as a slave.
I thought about getting a big huge 'Yale University' arching thing for my rear window, but I decided against it, because it really does feel like showing off. The only college window cling I have is one I got for free, and it shares window space with the 'AWD' sticker common to Subarus.
Nor do I wear the common blue cap with 'YALE' written across the front, nor the t-shirt or hoodie of the same design. Because, again, it feels like I'm bragging.
From what I've gathered by talking to other incoming freshman, this isn't an uncommon feeling. Many of them have gotten to the point where they try and avoid telling people where they're going (or give their residental college name instead).
My two yuan.
